Hey ladies, gents, and maybe a few enemies!
Its your girl Ollie, who loves Chiro matcha, beach, wellness, back at it again x
So here’s the vibe today: I woke up, meditated, 6am worked on ChiroMate, crushed morning pilates, ran 2k, did a coffee run and voila — she’s unstoppable despite running in the Sydney rain and wind. Let’s dive into 5 fun spine facts you didn’t know, brought to you by your fave chiro student.
Lets first understand baby anatomy of the spine, yes baby not BASIC. Cue music:
The spine, or vertebral column, is made of 33 stacked bones called vertebrae, you can try counting in image below.
Vertebral column is divided into cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum, and coccyx regions. (anatomical names bear with me)
Discs between the vertebrae act as cushions for shock absorption, while the spine protects the spinal cord, which carries messages between the brain and body.
Spine is supported by muscles and ligaments, it provides strength, flexibility, and movement.

Okay spine enthusiasts! Let’s dive into some fascinating facts about your backbone that might just make you sit up a little straighter. 😉
1. Your Spine’s Got Exceptional Memory!
Ever notice how hard it is to break bad posture habits? That’s because your spine “remembers” positions it’s frequently in. The good news? Train it with good posture, and it’ll adapt to that too!
2. 80% Australians Suffer from Back pain
Did you know that around
80% of Australians
will experience back pain at some point in their lives? (reference ACA)
Most of this discomfort targets the lower back, often due to prolonged sitting or poor posture.
3. 13.5 million BUZZING Neurons in your spine
Your spine is like a bustling highway, transmitting over a million nerve signals between your brain and body daily. Amazingly, it does this with the help of about
13.5 million neurons
, all packed into a structure weighing just 35 grams!
4. Same Neck Bones in Giraffes and Camels?
Humans have
seven cervical vertebrae
in their necks—the same number as giraffes and camels! So cool right
5. Astronauts Reaching their Dream Height
Astronauts returning from space often find themselves a bit taller than when they left. In microgravity, the absence of Earth’s pull allows spinal discs to expand, leading to a temporary height increase.
Remember, your spine is more than just a support structure; it’s a dynamic system crucial to your overall health. Treat it well, and it will support you your whole life 🌟
Stay fab, active and keep crushing goals!
xoxo,
Ollie
